Ok so I want to do something about the Super Typhoon Haiyan issue, since it has directly affected my family. I have relatives there that were caught in the eye of the typhoon. We only just got in contact with them yesterday to discover they are alive, just some injuries, broken home and a severe lack of food and water.
It was suggested by my dad that I do something like a bunch of art for money to donate to relief funds, but I really can’t take that many requests as it would be far too time consuming. My friend Rar’s suggested I could do a livestream (maybe 12-24 hour??? lol) where I just draw all day or w/e. Take art suggestions from the stream chat while keeping donations open.
So… idk. What do you guys think? <_> or have another suggestion?
As a person who's slowly adjusting to Dota 2 (from LoL)... I'm REALLY digging Pudge! How do you like him/will we be seeing any art of him soon!?
Hahaha well I’m not really much of a Pudge player at all so I don’t have a lot of interest drawing him. We’ll see though. Sometimes I just randomly feel like drawing heroes so for all we know I’ll suddenly get an itch for some butcher.
Man I fucking hate Super Training on Pokemon X. It’s so god damn unfair for anyone that’s left handed. Since I gotta use the stylus, use the joystick, hit the L button, all with my left hand. Meanwhile right-hand’s job has simply become ‘hold the DS still’. Like… seriously? Is there no way at all to change this?
Man.. I was so content with not getting the new Pokemon game cause I just don’t own a 3DS… and didn’t want to buy one just because of one game… but now a few days from release. I WANT THAT FUCKING GAME SAKJTHKJASHTKJAHSTKJHASKJTHKJ -cries
That post going around where the OP criticises the whiteness of the two new princesses from Frozen because they’re sick of caucasian princesses and people keep replying “it makes sense because of where all these stories take place” is PISSING ME OFF SO MUCH
YES IT MAKES SENSE THAT A STORY SET IN EUROPE IS PREDOMINANTLY WHITE BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT DISNEY CHOOSES WHICH STORIES TO ANIMATE AND WHERE TO SET THEM SO THAT DOESN’T REALLY MAKE IT BETTER
Talking about the diversity in hair colour etc of the white princesses only derails your point further because every fucking white chick has a princess to relate to in terms of their appearance, but sorry if you’re black you get Tiana and Tiana only sorry if you look different but what more do you want in terms of representation you have one isn’t that enough for you??
I mean I’ve been the obnoxious pale redhead idolising Ariel since I was fucking born, but I’ve been able to see enough of myself in Belle etc to have a variety of female Disney idols who had features just like me
Plus what’s stopping them from taking a classic fairy tale and doing a geographical/cultural reinterpretation of it? I’m pretty sure that as long as the core of the story stayed intact, most fans wouldn’t give that much of a shit about the change (excepting the inevitable racists)
I fucking love Disney but race representation is probably the biggest of their many, many flaws
I agreee that there needs to be more diversity in Disney but to their credit they have a quite a few PoCs in their movies? I mean it doesn’t come even close to the number of white characters but it’s a start, right? There’s Aladdin, Jungle Book (indians representin’ yo), Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan (a movie I relate to the most imo), Atlantis, Emperor’s New Groove, Lilo and Stitch. Tinkerbell movies (ngh) and of course The Frog Princess (which I felt was tokenistic as hell because they were pretty much shoehorning PoCs for the sake of appearing diverse. All I recall from their ad campaigns is that she was the “first black princess”, that was literally all they were saying about the movie besides the fact that it had 2D animation, it’s gross and stupid). Then there’s also the fact that a ton of these cartoons feature animals and not humans? So it becomes hard to say (ok excluding Dumbo with the whole racist as hell crows thing) definitively what race they’re representing so to speak.
Pushing for diversity is great, but when it’s done for the sake of it it just becomes tokenistic and kind of insulting. That kind of stuff needs to happen naturally and it needs to be part of a genuine creative process. If a character is good, well rounded and likeable, I will like that character regardless of their race. If a story is good and interesting I will still like it regardless of the main character’s race. Fuck, half of these characters are fucking animals and bugs and shit and I still love and relate to them. It’s not always about race.
Anyway, I think the reason for these (somewhat shitty) decisions rests purely on the fact that it’s the one thing that they can do that won’t offend anyone?? Like, I recall there was a lot of hullabaloo over the Frog Princess and a lot of creative decisions were based on what people wanted rather than what was interesting? Idk how to explain it but it felt like they had to hollow out the character for the sake of being inoffensive. Tiana was bland and absolutely dull as far as characters went, just couldn’t stand her. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a good excuse not to have diversity, I’m just saying that sort of factors into why there’s an absence of them (it sucks that that’s the case of course). All in all, I prefer interesting and relatable characters that don’t look like me over boring shitheads that do.
Annnnd another thing, we need to remember that Disney’s not what they used to be. The Golden Age of Animation was a long time ago and I think they’re just gaining back their momentum. Give that shit time and eventually they’ll take more creative directions. At the moment they’re just relying on old formulas because business and building consumer confidence and money and all that jazz. Just.Hm. Egh. Give it time, I guess.
